So you’ve booked your first psychiatric appointment… and you’re not sure what to expect. Totally normal.
Whether you’re feeling anxious, hopeful, or a mix of both, here’s what you need to know before that first virtual session — so you can feel confident and prepared.
At McNeil Psychiatric, we believe your first step toward healing should feel welcoming, not intimidating. Here’s what your journey will look like:
💻 Step 1: Get Comfortable With Virtual Care
Your session will take place through a secure video call.
All you need is:
- A quiet, private space
- A phone, tablet, or computer with camera & mic
- A strong internet connection
- Headphones (optional, but great for privacy)
💡 Tip: Many of our patients join from their bedroom, car, or home office — whatever feels safe and peaceful for you.
📋 Step 2: Complete Your Intake Forms
Before your visit, we’ll send you a link to our secure patient portal. You’ll fill out:
- Basic personal and medical history
- Questions about your symptoms
- Consent and privacy forms
We ask you to submit this at least 24–48 hours before your appointment, so your provider has time to review it and prepare with care.
🤝 Step 3: Meet Your Psychiatric Provider
Your first appointment is typically 60 minutes and includes:
- A warm, judgment-free welcome
- Questions about what brought you in
- Conversation about your health, sleep, stress, and goals
- Space to share anything that’s on your heart or mind
💬 This is not a quiz. It’s a conversation. You don’t need perfect words. You don’t need a diagnosis ready. Just come as you are.
🧠 Step 4: Get a Personalized Care Plan
After learning about you, your provider will:
- Share any initial thoughts or diagnosis (if appropriate)
- Offer treatment recommendations (therapy, medication, or both)
- Talk through medication options if needed, including how they work and what to expect
💊 Medication is never forced. If it feels right, we’ll walk you through every step. If not, we’ll explore holistic or therapy-based alternatives.
If you’re open to it, we can integrate faith into your care — through prayer, scripture, or spiritually sensitive discussion.
📅 Step 5: Schedule Your Follow-Up
You’ll wrap up with clear next steps:
- A follow-up visit in 2–4 weeks (if medication is started)
- Referrals to therapy or additional resources (if needed)
- Support through our patient portal for questions, refills, and progress
💙 What You Won’t Experience:
❌ Rushed conversations
❌ Cold, clinical language
❌ Shame for how you’re feeling
Instead, expect:
✅ Compassion
✅ Clarity
✅ Collaboration
